Composing a Song
Before I write down a song or composing one, I would normally base it on a specific emotion or reason of why I’m writing one. If it’s about a girl then the song would entirely themed about a girl or if it’s about rage or anger then the song would fit specifically for that type of theme. The flow, the chords , the lyrics would all fit in perfectly in the song itself so that the audience can tell or relate or guess what type of song this would be. The main idea is that the audience can understand my song and get my message underneath it because if they don’t, then it is a song that is not made out of passion but made out of thin air- which is not a good way of creating a song.
Allow me to digress a little bit about writing. I love writing and I admit it finally after a long time of hiding under the skin of art direction while secretly having an intimate affair with writing while I’m composing a song, writing poems, creating quotes and song lyrics. It’s such great satisfaction when I write things down on a piece of paper and a sharp pencil to accompany with as it decodes the things my heart and soul want to let go or to speak of. Do not get the wrong impression that I dislike art direction but I embrace it as an additional skill for my endeavor in the future for whatever I may pursue, especially in advertising. To me this is a blessing that I thank God for allowing me to unlock this hidden potential that I kept on belittling because of not having enough confidence in the England proficiency of writing and speaking.
Now back to the main topic of this copy which is about writing and composing songs. Usually when I begin to start anything at all, I would figure out why am I writing the song and for who is it dedicated to. Call me a romantic but that’s how I usually work and most of the song I write are very personal to me – but it is usually about a girl that I like or I might had missed a chance to be with ( yes, I’m just a romantic with a restraining order).
Then, when I figure out how the song going to be, I move on to the creation of the chords and writing the lyrics down along the way. This would take normally around the entire day but if I put my mind into it, I can finish a rough draft of the song before night. And then a little editing before midnight but by tomorrow morning or evening, the song would be polished over and over again and more additional chords or lyrics would be inserted or taken out for the final completion of the song. With a little help from my 16 year old and 21 year old brothers, whom has been playing guitar for more than 10 years, the song would be played in front of them for further feedback or any improvements towards the song.
If lucky, a simple comment such as “its average, its fine, its okay, and sounds like a Peterpan song” would just bring joy to my ears. But usually they would throw a couple of cynical remarks and taunts just to make my ears blow steam while feeling insecure about the once proud song that was created in a mere 2 day span.
Anyways, without digressing furthermore from the topic- this is how I write down a song and when I do it, I do it my way. The idea is when writing down almost about anything; make sure there is the beginning, the middle and the end so that you won’t lose focus of the audience.
p.s
Watch out in the future for I may start inserting some of my songs in my blog. It’s a rare treat to music lovers and aspiring writers.
