Am I here because you need a Malay?
In my experience as a creative in an ad agency, my whole 5 years to be exact,I always find myself surrounded by many (and I do mean many) Chinese creatives. And ever since the late Yasmin Ahmad, I have always wondered whether my employers are hiring me because I'm Malay and I'm there to fill in the Malay spot for the creative team OR am I hired because I'm talented.
I want to believe the latter so badly because I loathe it if I was hired because of my race.
Let's face it, the advertising industry is filled with Chinese peeps while the Malays and Indians are quite miniscule. Scary innit? And all of them are very hardworking, talented and highly educated. So, what can a college dropout do to survive in the fray?
I either sink or swim baby. Period.
Luckily for me, this situation puts me in a very delicious position. I can prove to myself that I can make it. That I can work as hard and better. That underneath our skin, we have feelings, emotions and the need for love. The love that we want to share with the world. And make the world a happier place. Not to judge people by their skin, but by their contribution, creation and making lives better. Pushing the human race forward.
So to answer my own question "Am I here because you need a Malay?"
"I'm here because I have the capabilities to do great things".
