I'm no writer.
I don't have a book or a novel coming out of me; even if I do, it would probably take me some time. Forget Tolstoy, Martin Amis or even J.K Rowling - I rarely read books by these people. On the other hand, I read business books and advertising books. Judging by my mediocre bookshelf, my books will make any self-respecting writer shudder in pain. But what can I do? I like to read books that are beneficial to me; life's too short to read books that you don't like anyway.
The old adage is "read and devour all kinds of books and you'll be a great writer". Well, there's something definitely wrong with that archaic statement - it does not apply to every one.
I, for one, would like to revamp that statement.
"Read and devour all the books you like and you'll be a great writer".
Now, isn't that much better? Can't you feel that burden lifting off your shoulders? Can you feel that sense of empowerment? Can you feel all the memories of reading books from Ayn Rand and etc vanishing slowly but steadily?
Yeah, maybe I'm not going to be a word scholar, an English teacher or a novelist. But at least I still read and as long as I keep reading, my veins will pump words and the paper will never be empty. And that itself is enough to bring me satisfaction (not as much as sex anyways).
So screw your nagging thoughts for coaxing and forcing you to read boring books. And screw those who think you should read the Twilight Chronicles.
