Creative Writing

This article, that you are about to read, was inspired by Two in The Bush. The guy is a brilliant writer and I was lucky enough to get to know him while I was working in Leo Burnett KL. Anyway, not to digress further, I hope you enjoy this article as much as I did, 2 years ago.

This is a writing exercise. It’s pretty interesting and I think, in some metaphysical sense, makes a good practice for aspiring writers.

First, select an object or weather.
I chose a pencil (naturally cuz I’m a writer).

Give it a personality.

A pencil is:
Very skinny. Boring. A servant in disguise like Jeeves from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Blunt – in your face persona. Can be fragile.

Now write a poem.

Pencil was a boring kid
He is quiet, reserved and fragile
If someone wants to use him
He must be handled with care

He breaks easily if you press him
But if you let it be
He’ll make beautiful lines
And masterpieces that stand the test of time

Pencil is slender
Because if he was too fat
People would opt for the computer instead

He can be blunt
Sometimes he can be too sharp
It’s hard to predict his emotions
